Engine noise

Hi All

Really new here and have owned my XF for lass than 2 weeks and only driven it for a week. Last summer I had a XFS D on loan for 2 days and I remember being impressed with the quietness of the engine (no typical diesel clutter which you get from 4 cylinder Diesel engines).

Mine me is quite rattly and sounds very much like your typical 4 cylinder Diesel engine. When driving it's almost like really bad pinking on a petrol engine.

Its under waranty so I am not seriously concerned but wondering if there are any known issues which would cause this noise. It drives fine with no loss of power and fuel consumption appears typical of other members experience.

On tick-over standing outside its almost as loud as my neighbours Vauxhall Movano diesel van!!

Thanks
Brian

Excuse the spelling mistakes, I hate typing on the iPad as it likes to apply spurious correction making it look like I can't spell!!!

for lass !! - Typed less.

mine me - only typed mine!

Only a theory, but I would have a good look into its service history, if it's last service wasn't at a main dealer I would be suspicious of which oil was used, a lot of independent garages are fine, I use one, they know their stuff and will use the correct oil, but there is a chance that someone unfamiliar with these engines could have used a heavier oil, in the current temperatures that might be too thick and not performing correctly.

All 3 services have been at Jaguar main dealers with the last one in November and 2000 miles ago. Always use good fuel and only fill up at Shell or Tesco (petrol of choice is Tescos momentum although no premium diesel option).

It needs to go back to the dealer anyway as the fix they did for the fuel tank baffle means it now takes me 20 minutes (no word of a lie) to fill up as the nozzle cuts out constantly.

It needs to go back and have a technician listen to it then, if they do try to say it sounds normal ask them to start another one up and compare it.

the only other thing I can think of, there was some reports of leaking flexible exhaust joints on some early cars which usually caused a smell in the cabin but I'm guessing could also cause a gruff engine note too, though not the mechanical sound which you seem to suggest, and I think the was sorted on later cars.

Let us know how you get on.

On my 3.0 D, I sometimes hear the rattling noise after starting on a cold day, but it doesn't last for more than a half a minute or so.
On tickover, the car is as good as silent.
Just as an example, I recently had a battery failure, and I had to get a jump start from a petrol engined car. With both cars engines running and boots and bonnets closed, I could hear the petrol engine but couldn't hear mine.

Jagular's suggestion sounds like a good idea. Compare to the sound of an XF with the same engine at your dealer's place. Just make sure both engines are warm first.

It's the 3.0D and I remember how impressed I was with the demo cars engine refinement last year. Mine does sound like a French diesel!!! It's still there when driving so not just at tickover hence me likening the sound to pinking in a petrol car.

Will take it back to the dealer and also compare to another car whilst there.

Thanks All

Well, basically it is a French diesel. Those diesel engines were made in collaboration between Ford and Peugeot. The same engine is used in the large Peugeots and Citroëns. Or was used. I don't think they use six cylinders anymore. The Peugeot HDI diesel have always had a reputation of sounding softer and more pleasant than the TDI of Volkswagens. Peugeot is one of the most experienced car manufacturers when it comes to diesel engines. You can say what you want about French cars, but the diesel engines is not their weak point.

Yes I'd agree they sound softer.

I have a similar dilema. Had a 3.0 XFS 59 plate for 4.5 years. Test drive a facelift 64 plate with 10k miles which sounded better than my '59. A bit of almost v8 rumble to the exhaust note, not much pinking from the injectors or diesel combustion noise. Anyway I chose another 64 plate with 8k miles and have bought it freshly serviced. If I am honest it sounds a bit worse than my 59 plate; not on small throttle openings but where you give it some throttle there is more diesel noise much more than I recall the other '64 plate XF S I test drove. Anyone else notice variable engine noise between cars?

The 3.0D S in my XF sounds very refined, and idles quietly. A friend has a Peugeot 407 GT with the 2.7 diesel engine (closely related to the Jaguar unit) which is a little louder but still very refined for a diesel :)

I have been advised its normal diesel combustion noise. This does surprise me as its so much noisier than any of my previous 6 cylinder diesels and louder than the long term test drive one I had.

Thanks. I use supermarket fuel maybe I will try a tank or 2 of the malted stuff. I'll have it checked when its next in the dealer but I think it could be related my "ear" or just the newer one is quieter at low speeds highlighting the differences when you give it some throttle. But if this is typical I wouldn't mind a better synthetic noise.

That's a thought. The petrol engines have an air duct that pipes engine noise into the cabin when you step on the accelerator. Annoying actually. I wonder if the diesel has the same silly gizmo?

Ok so after 8 thousand on my Diesel S varying between running several tankfuls on regular diesel followed run low and several tanks of Shell V Power and repeating. My subjective conclusion is I hear hear less diesel combustion noise on the V Power. There is softer noise with the premium fuel and with less diesel combustion "tap". It's to the point where I would now prefer to pay extra for the V Power and search out a garage that stocks it. It also makes me wonder that there may be a trick here for test drives fill your cars with the "ultra fuels" because they sound a bit softer. This may explain the variation in engine noise I noticed across test drives of Jags (and Merc 350s).... Just a theory.

Interesting to know that Jer, I've heard about the various benefits of Shell V Power (I normally use Shell regular diesel), might have to give it a try :)

i am at the moment running a 2.2 200hp sportbrake and i am very pleased with it, not as quite as the 2.7 v6 saloon as i had before, 4cyl diesels are not known for there quietness we all know that. at the moment it's in the workshop having a warranty job done on it so they loaned me a new xe with only 3000mls on the clock this has the new jaguar engine in and boy o boy is this a loud diesel it sounds like a delivery van not what you would you expect from jaguar. my own car has the older mix of engine and it's a lot quieter than this one.
