Checking for water ingress

I am starting to check for the dreaded washer pump/BCM water ingress issue for two reasons:

  • I haven't had the car long, so being prudent.
  • I have a flickering footwell light and my locking double beeps when i try to lock it despite all door closure sensors being ok.

I've been reading up but could someone who knows more than me confirm - is it the bottom grey connectors i should check?

This is pending me having more time to take the wheel and arch lining off.

Thanks

For info, this is a water damaged BCM:

You need to disconnect car battery and clean that up pronto. Identify what wire on the loom that the water is coming from, cut it and install the 'break'. I bet its the washer pump wires. Also the connector plugs will need inspecting/cleaning. Looks like you may have caught it just in time....maybe.

The battery disconnect is a risk you're going to have to make im afraid. Ideally remove the BCM from the car to clean up and dry etc properly. Yes the facelift x250 BCM's are finicky breing powered down, but you have no choice.

The water has already made its way right up the wire(s). Ideally (again) identify what wire and replace it, as the strands of that wire will be corroded and possibly still wet inside. You will need to re pin the plug with a new length of wire and run that wire through the bulkhead all the way to the washer pump (if thats the offender)

As the BCM is still functioning it may appear that things have been caught in time. BUT you need to do a proper job at this stage to stop any further damage. Especially abandoning and replacing the offending wire(s) and re wiring and re pinning. Proper job can only really be achieved with BCM out. All the above is fairly simple, but right royal pain in the ass.
BUT....just think if you hadn't decided to check the BCM today.....it could hsve got a hell of a lot worse and ££££££££

Once removed (easy peasy) you can bring the BCM indoors and give it a good clean up/dry.

Yeah the plug re pin and new wiring will have to be done in daylight, even then its dark in the footwell, so additional lighting will be required 👍

Yeah 🙄

When putting in new wire, dont forget the 'inline break' to stop it happening again. If it is the washer pump, put the break close to the pump itself.

The following tells you how to de-pin the connectors.

I'd suggest after cleanup of the BCM you apply some Nyogel 760G to the connector pins of that connector and the BCM, and replace the harness side pins ( receptacles actually ).

You can get the connector pins from :-

This crimp tool does a reasonable job with those pins :-

Personally I think feeding a new wire through the bulkhead is a pretty big job ( especially without causing a new route for water ingress), so draining the wire as in the TSB, fitting a waterproof splice near the BCM ( fit it with sealed butt connectors, so they can't drip), with new wire with a fresh connector to connect to the BCM, along with replacing any other corroded pins in the harness connector is probably "enough"
Remember the purpose of the waterproof splice is to prevent water passing along within the insulation for that one wire for the washer motor, "water proof" connectors, usually don't prevent that, they're only intended to prevent water ingress from outside of the insulation ( e.g. rain )

When disconnecting the battery, unlock the car, open and close the drivers door, make sure all doors are shut, open the boot, put the keys out of range, then wait 20 mins before you disconnect it ( without opening or closing any doors while you're waiting ). Then the chance of corruption is much lower.

EDIT: not a bad idea to put another break near the pump too.

Looks like the upgraded pumps are really cheap; i'd assume it's worth whipping the wheel and arch liner off and replacing the pump once all cleaned up?
£117 for a washer pump doesn't sound cheap to me, ( but maybe that's just me )
Personally I'd go for https://www.amazon.co.uk/febi-bilstein-34864-windscreen-washing/dp/B006DHVZO4 at < £12 ( it seems febi make them for ford, JLR used to be owned by ford ;) and they use a fico-transpar pump just like the original ), you don't know if it's the fixed design but if you've done a good waterproof splice, that's a little irrelevant.

Yes, definitely don't leave the leaking pump in place.

Yup....inside the plastic sheath. The wire is like a 4 or 6 core and acts like a candle wick......its all physics lol

Looks like you are now on it mate 👍

You have all the info....let us know how it goes. If you have any issues then just reach out again. Someone will help.

I think you have. Just give the BCM a good old clean up and make sure there is no residual water inside it. Hopefully all will be well.

Stage 1 of a few done. Cleaned up the socket/port on the BCM as well as i could. Fiddly. Used contact cleaner, cocktail sticks and one of my kids' mini paintbrushes! And a hairdryer on cold setting.

New Febi pump, waterproof connectors to insert a break x 2 are coming over the weekend.

Am going to de-pin a few wires one by one out of the BCM harness end to check and clean individual pins and check wire condition. If ok will put a thin smear of dielectric grease on pins and the male connectirs in the BCM and reassemble. If not ok, will strip wire back a bit to better assess condition.

Wanted to stop the current rot as fast as possible, even though other bits haven't arrived.

Oh mate, looks much better 👍

Yup, good idea with wires/pins, if okay, indeed re-use.

Get that new pump and break in and thats it all done.

Preventative measures to avoid a costly catastrophe!

Well i'm all done (I hope), minus whacking the new pump and wire break in tomorrow when it arrives. But the BCM end is cleaned up. And I don't appear to have bricked the car 😂.

I depinned a number of the wires individually from the affected BCM harness, cleaned them and put a smear of dielectric grease on each one. Then reinserted firmly. Then put the BCM back in, inserted all harnesses, checked a gazillion times versus an original photo that it was all in the right place, and reconnected the battery.

Car started fine as expected, and only error was re handbrake; i applied it and it went away.

Overhead light only was still flickering; so i've just removed the overhead unit, cleaned the connectors, whacked some LEDs in and it all seems fine.
