Hi Guys,

Do any of you use a steering wheel lock as a physical deterrent? If yes, which one would you recommend I buy?

If any of you use it, do you use it all the time or just overnight or when you are away for a long time.

lastly, whats the general thinking on the forum with regards to the security of your XF. Are you concerned or do you think that a steering wheel lock isn't needed.

Thanks,

Sunny

As far as I am aware, the only way to steal the car is with the keys. There is so much technology in the car nowadays with immobilisers and transponders that the chances are the thief would have broken into your house to steal the keys before they can get away with the car, and you would probably keep the key to the steering lock on the same fob as the car key anyway which would make it pointless. Nowadays, if someone wants to steal a car for a joyride, they wouldn't go anywhere near something like an XF as its just too difficult. If the car is being stolen to order (as I understand is the way premium cars are generally stolen nowadays), they can just pull up with a flatbed transporter and lift the car onto the truck and drive away - a steering lock in this case would be pointless as well. so my summary (for what its worth) is that the only reason for a steering lock nowadays is if you have a car that has no (or little)anti-theft technology built into it in the first place. I'd trust the might JLR to have done the job for you!

You bring up some interesting points. Like I said above, a colleague's range Rover was stolen not that long ago. Which made me think that a similar technique (stealing code in key) could be used on an XF as well in which case a stoplock or similar good quality steering wheel lock will be a visual deterrent and also make it hard (not impossible) to take the car away readily.

Not needed anymore. The car cannot be started without the key or a device to steal the code in the key. Engine immobilizers are standard fitment now.

Anyone sophisticated enough to steal your car won't be deterred by a steering wheel club. The device would only deter the terminally stupid so if that's your purpose any type would be sufficient, it wouldn't even have to lock, you would be just trying to prevent an unnecessarily broken window.

I recently saw an old Honda Civic in my neighbourhood with a club on the wheel but the car was so riddled with rust any thief would be risking his life driving it away! Honda once earned the dubious title of easiest car to steal in Canada.

A device used to steal the code in the key is what made me bring this topic up. A colleague at work had their Range Rover stolen from their driveway at night. No one broke in. There was no noise and it was gone an hour after they returned from shopping. Surely a stoplock or similar steering wheel lock would have prevented this. Based on the reviews I've read, I take it they are not that easy to break into.
