Can anyone tell me how to stop the right hand side of the sat nav screen changing to the useless distance to next junction(s) display when joining a motorway?
This is probably my #1 pet peeve in the XF!
(This is on a 10-plate car, BTW)

Boy, wouldn't I like that to be my only peeve with the Sat=Nav :)

I've just come back from a trip to the south of Spain. To get from Bordeaux to Malaga,in the south of Spain, it wanted me to go to the eastern end of the Pyrennes and down past Barcelona, following the coast road to Malaga. I carried on to the west.
The Sat-Nav refused to recognise the main motorway
running down the centre of Spain 'through' Madrid, It kept trying to get me to leave it, directing me
constantly to the west.
I have been using that Motorway for at least 10 years so it should be on the Sat-Nav.
A real Pita.

Have you programmed your personal preferences. i.e. motorway is first priority etc. I also had major problems until I did. Having said that I no longer trust it to provide the route I prefer. Before any major journey I always check on computer which way I should be heading in general terms, noting the motorway changes.

Hi Bernard. Thanks for the thought but I have tried that several times, thinking I must have something wrong. It was already on the correct settings - Motorways/Main roads and Toll roads. I did get to see Cordoba though ; seemed to the only way to shut her up :)

Sorry none of this helps the OP Vorix.

I know how you feel. When I first used the satnav on my XF it showed a map of the local area with my car position moving down the road. Now it's decided to show a map of the whole of the UK which is useless. I just have to rely on the voice.

I have to say that I don't like this satnav. I'm sure that it works well when you've put in a lot of effort out found out how it works but it should be more user-friendly than that. The makers could take a few tips from TomTom.

I spent a long time getting it right and putting regular UK and continental journeys into memory. The manual is useless and so is the on-line help. The XJ was little better but the manual is quite good. On the other hand current Volvo SatNav is excellent, intuitive and quick. No manual really necessary. Jaguar, if you are watching please note. At least improve the manual please.
Now we await all those who find it no problem.

Neither did I ... and here is a tutorial some might understand (is it not getting boring with me posting all these video tutorials on the XF functions found on youtube?? :D) --- I am sorry, but only for those with the MY2012 and later screen

Thanks 'TheGerman' . Any help is gratefully received.
I wll try again. I would just love to have to eat humble pie and praise this Sat-Nav to the skies :). I would love to sit down with a decent manual and see where I am going wrong.
When you go on-line for instructions it tells you how to enter a Post-code. Finish.

Love the car though. Had a great drive down to south of Spain.

Dear TheGerman,
In the last month :-

Leaving a location I turned left and then asked it to take me home, expecting to find the M20 motorway. After a very long journey along single lane country roads and making three right turns I found myself almost back where I started heading in the opposite (correct) direction. Any other SatNat would have immediately said make a U-turn when safe to do so..

2. Driving in France it instructed me to leave a motorway and travel for 30 minutes through villages only to rejoin the same motorway at the next junction.

3. Driving in the UK along A roads I found myself on B Roads following farm tractors going about their business. The A road would have taken me to my destination.

Do you have another video you can recommend please to sort this lot out.

Not a video, but maybe using TomTom :D:D (oh, that´s already been suggested, sorry)

On a more serious note .. I have not had these problems yet, but it sounds like you should take in the "prefered" settings B roads out (it will prefer to be using A roads then I suppose) and turn TMC of (which in conjuction with using smaller roads for a "shorcut" might be another reason to take you off a motorway, only to lead you back a little while later).

I've become very disillusioned with any form of car navigation system quite frankly and have experienced much of the trials and tribulations mentioned above whether it was installed in a Mercedes or the xf. I have been directed down very narrow country lanes through floods and even round in a circle as has also been stated by Bernard. One tends to rely far too much on the system and does not take in the scenery and landmarks so that when things go awry, one is completely flummoxed.
In the interim I have gone back to the old fashiond ways of planning my route via maps and with the help of my long suffering wife who actually seems to like playing navigator.
One other serious flaw with the Navi., is road works. Here it can only fail completely and I was totally screwed up in a city, called Bremen, which ended in me going round in circles several times.
I can only concur with Bernard again because I have also regularly experienced the navi. attempting to send me along country lanes and also via an indirect route, and also the wrong way down a one way street even though I have programmed the thing to take the shortest and fastest roads i.e. Autobahns.
I also found myself trying to work the navi. whilst driving along which is complete folly, I know, but I reckon everyone does it which is, to my mind, far more dangerous than telephoning.

That's no good. I would have nothing to curse on long journeys. Seriously prior planning is a necessity with this particular SatNav but you still cannot alleviate the problems I outlined above. SatNav apart I still enjoy every journey, no other moans from me.

Hurray, I've been meaning to ask this question but kept forgetting. I will susbscribe in case somebody comes up with the answer. It's even worse than you describe up here in the North, because the SatNav keeps trying to avoid the road works on the M62; every time you fail to leave at the junction it tells you, it has to recalculate the remaining journey and the blasted list of junctions pops up again.

I wonder if the TMC and roadworks is the main source of my problems ?
On my recent trip to the south coast of Spain there were many roadworks from Bordeaux south all the way down the centre of Spain.
It wouldn't account for all my problems but could account for many.
We really need more detailed information on operating the system.

Thanks for trying to be helpful TheGerman, much appreciated, however believe me I have tried everything in the "proverbial" book to no avail. I would use the actual book if it were any good. The post from Pekem worries me that this has been going on for years. The fact remains that the same set of maps in a Volvo behave impeccably. Jaguar need to look at their programming, that is after they have solved the "thump in the back" syndrome.
Sorry to combine two subjects Sir Pekem, I stand corrected in advance.

I am having similar problems, particularly in London.

The sat nav seems to think I can drive though South london at an average speed of more than 30mph - eg destination 12 miles in 22 minutes. I am convinced this is why it sometimes sends me off on bizarre routes?

Is there somewhere were I can set the road speeds?
My previous sat nav was always pessimistic and I arrived earlier than it originally suggested, which was quite helpful. With the XF the arrival time is ludicrous. I have a MY2012 2.2

Have you checked if "learning" is switched on in your system.

I suppose (and that´s an assumption) that it does not just learn shortcuts you prefer but also the way (the speed) you drive.
Otherwise I would have to go with Bernard F -- not that mine is spot on but it´s rather accurate about ETA and does self correct.

#26 ·
Very strange. I have been complaining about many things yet my ETA is always nearly spot on. In fact it self corrects fairly regularly. I do journey to London from Essex and again no problem, but I have never started and finished in London so perhaps this would be different.

#28 ·
Always on Pekem, but this also brings problems. When it wants to re-route me and I say no it keeps repeating every minute or so.

On a personal note I just noticed that my self correcting dictionary changed your name to something it should not be. Explains previous episode.
