The reason for the RESTRICTED PERFORMANCE message could be due to a number of different things but basically the car has gone into limp home mode. I had this message after less than a week of ownership and it was due to the turbo actuator valve sticking.

Unfortunately as I was one of the first to experience this and given that it was mid-December, I didn't get the car back until mid-January. First of all I was given a Vauxhall Insignia followed by a Jaguar X Type, neither of which were as nice as my lovely XF.

Call Jaguar Assist and see if you can get someone out to run diagnostic checks on your car Rob.

Hope you get it sorted out soon.

Steve

Just had a 'Restricted Performance' incident this morning. Car is just under 2 years old and has just been in for its 2nd service. First time it has ever done this - I am sure the temperature cannot be a coincidence. Have put a call into the dealer and waiting for them to ring me back. I thought that they had done the above fix on my car as part of a standard service, but perhaps not. The irony is that a colleague asked how the car was only yesterday afternoon and I said that it had never missed a beat...........

Well, the Jaguar Assist guy confirmed a sticking actuator valve, so it will be down to the dealership to collect the car and fix it for me. Fortunately, I don't need the car next week, so don't have the hassle of hire cars etc. The technician had obviously seen dozens of these and said that it may be months before it happens again (or never). However, I don't plan on being on the wrong side of the road during an overtaking manoeuvre when it decides to go wrong next time, so will expect them to do the above repair.

Let me tell you my story with "DSC not available" message.

More than a month ago my XF (diesel 2.7, 2008) started reporting two amber messages (always at the same moment): "DSC not available" and "Restricted Performance". Both appeared exactly the same millisecond. On average I could see the messages every 30km, while gently accelerating the car. Engine's restart always made the messages gone. I could not use the car safely, so I decided to ask jaguar authorized professionals. After fault code reading, they did not observe any particular DTC. The only reported ones were: U0401-68 and U0100-87, which as they said "are not relevant". It seemed ABS to ECU communication was not perfect, the garage cleared errors saying the car was ok.

After 60km I noticed the same set of messages, and this time I decided to ask professional diagnostics team for help. The story began again, no particular DTCs other than the two mentioned. However after 2-week test (!), they closely looked at a right side EGR which did not fully close. After they have repaired the EGR I got my XF back. The car did ca 100km and guess what, two errors came back with additional bonus: I got "engine check" signal more. I was puzzled, I spent EUR 1.5k on the service and did not get it fully repaired. After one hour thinking I decided to replace my battery with almost brand new Volvo 100Ah. I was f... shocked seeing my car fresh and alive after this operation. The "engine check" went out after I started engine for 4 times. I did 150km those day and there was no warnings on the screen! HALLELUJAH!

I came back to the garage trying to claim the EUR 1.5k back. We made a deal that after they put back again the old "faulty" EGR, I would do one-week test and they would give me the cash back if they did not detect any DTC. I won, my car was perfect even with minus 21 Celsius outside.

I have to admit that the old Jaguar's battery works perfectly with anther non-jaguar car as its capacity is still ok. I have checked it with the battery service center, which did not detect any fault!

I was trying to check if there is any Jaguar's TSB covering the "DSC not available" and "Restricted Performance" messages without DTC logged and can not find any. It seems to me, that good looking, efficient battery can fool completely XF, which is equipped with the famous smart "Battery Module", making a noise in the HS CAN and messing the communication between modules.

After this experience I will always check battery if any communication error between modules, especially ECU, appears.

Tonight my XF had it's first 'non cosmetic' fault. I was stationary in traffic when the message centre reported 'ABS Fault' & 'DSC Unavailable'. I'm probably the first one to suffer this while stationary because it has one other little trick up it's sleeve. It releases the EPB at the same time as the message is displayed.

The car moved forward about half a metre before I instinctively applied the footbrake. I say insinctively because no thought went into the reaction, it was probably just down to my subconscious mistrust of the EPB concept.

Anyway, shutting down has not cleared the fault so it's off to the dealers tomorrow.

Sounds like ABS module fault. Didn't you push brake and accelerator at once, when stationary? If yes, then erasing of fault register should help. I keep my fingers crossed.
It was caused by a broken wire to one of the abs wheel speed sensors. The dealer fitted a new harness yesterday. It took about 90 minutes which was pretty good considering the front bumper had to come off & they washed the car afterwards.

in the 4 years i have had mine i have now lost count of the times mine had flagged this up. well over 100. to the point now that i completely ignore it, mine goes away either on the same journey or when i shut down and restart. bloody computers !

could be many things but id first look at DPF issues and see if it needs a "regeneration"
do a google or forum search on the issues.

good luck.

A sticking turbo actuator is a possibility. 2009 & early 2010 cars were affected. The best thing to do is to take it to a dealer & get the fault codes read.

This is the same problem i have had on our A4 so thats why i went bought a xf, four time this went on took it to Audi who said no fault code showing, in the end they said it ould be a sticking turbo actuator which would not give a fault code, so he said it may be due to me not thrashing the car enough to burn the gunge off, ? dont know but there esamate for repair was deposit on the xf!!

A sticking turbo actuator does produce a fault code on the XF. It is a well known problem on 2009 & early 2010 cars & has been the subject of a service action.

1.5 months off the end of my warranty I too have just got the restricted performance error

Sod's Law I'm 100+ miles from home in my caravan for a week! It came on after a long day trip drive south to a relatives and I've limped back north to the Lakes limited to 30mph up some long climbs :( Stopped for diesel and it went off for a while, but with the window down and going uphill, there was a lot of turbo wine and air noises. On the upside, I achieved 47mpg up the M6 after 125 limping miles...Absolutely everything was overtaking me (even an old Ford Orion 1.6 pulled away from me on one incline).

I have no other errors, so just RP. Will drive home tomorrow morning and pass XF to son to look after and try and suss with dealer and drive our other car back. Hopefully, it can be sussed in time to bring caravan home next weekend

Hoping not a big bill...had favourable "good will" episodes previously with BMW UK, so fingers crossed with first contact with Jaguar UK  if needed. May be cracked hose or this reported actuator issue....

Watch this space & another long driving session tomorrow. Roll-on flat roads and a tail wind

200 miles later....son thinks it's a cracked intercooler where inlet pipe situated....so it's off to the dealers in the morning....

I hope that this is not going off topic, but could anyone tell me under what circumstances anyone would want to turn off DSC?
I can think of two reasons.
1. To demonstrate what happens if you do.
2. People, for that read idiots, who wish to skid all over the place to impress their mates.

No doubt someone will give us a more sensible reason. Something to do with track racing I suspect.

Whenever you want your wheels to slip to get traction
... like driving on slippery surface in winter with winter mode on. Otherwise DSC might deregulate the power (because of slipping wheels) to an extend where you don´t get anywhere.
... another might be on the track where you might like more flexibility (before deregulation of the power) as far as wheel spin is concerned.

b.t.w.: Turning of DSC takes you to what Jaguar calls Trac DSC. There still is some regulation but not as much as the "normal" setting.
