Many people new to detailing are not clear about the differences between polish and wax. The difference is quite simple: a polish is abrasive (and usually had fillers in it) and a wax is not abrasive at all and contains no fillers. That's why a car polish will have a powdery residue when you buff it to a shine. A wax has no residue.
An example of a polish: Autoglym Super Resin Polish
An example of a wax: R222 Concours-look Carnauba Wax (formerly P21S)
Personally I prefer waxing a car but the effort required is considerably more than polishing it, but the results are always better.
