Hi all,

Just my own anecdotal observations.

When my diesel XF was new, March 08, and the engine was very fresh, when I stopped the car after a run where the engine was hot, I could hear lots of ticking from the engine upon parking up. After a couple of weeks, I had the DPF full warning, and did as I was told by the handbook, went out for a gentle run in the car along a quiet motorway in an evening.

I then forgot about the ticking from the engine.

In the intervening 9 months I have travelled about 10,000 miles in the car, longer journeys, and not had the DPF warning. In the second half of January, I definitely did fewer long journeys, many shorter trips, and before the DPF full appeared last week, I again noticed the loud ticking on engine cooldown. After the DPF run, that sound has gone away.

Am I alone, or have any other diesel owners else noticed this effect?

Yes the noise you describe is the DPF trying to regenerate and as you have done a short journey it cannot complete (you may also feel some heat as well as hear the ticking) after a few days of this the DPF full warning will occur
