Reported in the Daily Telegraph 8th January that the now small fleet of armoured Jaguar XJ s used by our Prime Minister could soon be replaced with BMWs or Mercedes. Jaguar XJ s have been used in this role for the last 30 years but JLR have confirmed that no new XJ s are available now and any replacement is some time away and that they are not taking orders.
Sad day that our once world class Car manufacturing industry has been so decimated and swallowed up by foreign companies that we can no longer provide suitable prestige cars for our Government ministers that are manufactured in the UK.

Sad day that...
that 'sad day' happened 35 years ago, when Downing Street saw 'Rover' 800s parked in it.

That car was nothing but a Honda Legend - 'Project XX'.

The 1968 XJ and 1976 Rover SD1 were the last British luxury cars.

BMW might have saved Rover, but were treated like lepers by the petty German-haters in Whitehall and wider British socirty - endlessly mocked - Spitfires v Messerschmitts etc, if not openly hostile to having a Kraut company own 'the crown jewels'.

Ford lost its mind and around £15bn in today's money, trying to keep a plainly long-expired company going.

Now there are no white knights, seventh cavalry riding in to save the day.

The 2009 X351 XJ was a just rebodying of Ford's 2003 X350.

The 'Outraged of Tunbridge Wells' commenters in the Torygraph spitting tacks today over Jerry supplying the PM's car, need to move on, at least half a century, from the 1950s or '60s they plainly live in.

Britain is a pipsqueak in global automotive terms. Its real champion and leader is JCB. 100% British, and a genuine global success.

Perhaps Spaffer should be given a 3CX - half-armoured already - just swing the bucket around to dodge those eggs/RPGs.

He's used to driving one already - through Brexit polystyrene walls - and the bucket has a Safe Working Load of 10 CWT, so should just be able to take Spaffer.

They could do that of course, but the car still wouldn’t be green. The PM wants to have a green image, so he needs an EV or at least a PHEV.

10 Downing Street to the Palace of Westminster is no more than half a mile so they could add a few batteries to get the car that distance and for other journeys the PM could , as he and the Royal Family presently do,
use a Range Rover ; but to satisfy the green lobby a PHEV model.

It would be 2 years old. PM's 'world shop-window' car on a 'Q' plate? Either that or a '19' plate.

What next, a kit car.

Don't care how well preserved/low mileage/stored, it's still be quite a secondhand car, which then has to be signed off for a 'VIP', and take the weight of ~ 1 tonne of armoring - brave soul to put their signature to that.

Plus, the emissions regs of mid-2021 are not those of say early 2019/late 2018, to which the last XJs would have been built.

You might say, just drop a latest spec V8 in it, but also all the systems the engine talks to,the whole car.

Euro 7 is just around the corner, with some makers like Mercedes about to lauch engines that are 995 there, compliant.

Yes, the authorities in the UK would rubber stamp a JLR for the PM, even if it was a Euro 1 horse and cart, but it still doesn't look good, like something out of 70s, 80s Eastern Bloc - smoky Trabants versus a Golf.

They're stuck. As Muenster says, they need, not want, an EV for the PM - PDQ!

But JLR has none - just the reverse Tardis I-Pace - huge on the outside, sub-Golf inside - not fit even pre-armour for anyone in the back.

There is no EV Range Rover, and the ever-coming eXJ/New XJ was binned two years ago, as we know.

So, what are they to do, to show the Boris-adoring masses they are Green?

They could do a one-off EV Range Rover, like the EV E-type for the Ginger bloke's wedding.

But, Plod needs probably at least six - decoys, cover for breakdowns, etc.

JLR can't do that - haven't the time, money or expertise - semi-production of a very complciated EV vehicle, not done by someone else, and not 1-off type approval.

The Telegraph guy's story was right - they're stuck, and no easy, obvious way out, except buying German - The Hun in Downing Street!

Maybe Brenda, who is mostly German, could lend Spaffer her 'British' special-built Bentley.
