Members will have read elsewhere of the desirabilty of a Members Only area to allow the exchange of information which is judged to be sensitive in one way or another.
I do not know if such an area can be created and discussions would need to take place with the site owner.
However, in the meantime, it might be of value to discover if there is a general wish to see one established.

So, in the time honoured way, we will have a Poll :)

P.S. Contrary to what I understand is reported on the U.S. site, I wish to acknowledge and thank zx10ben for mailing me and suggesting the idea of the poll and member area etc. :)

So is this going to be an un-censored area?
absolutely  hardcore porn and bestiality ahoy

tongue in cheek aside, i think this is an entirely reasonable attempt to resolve recent issues on here :)

and a slight follow-on from the previous thread as i think there may have been a minor misunderstanding - my definition of 'members-only' would be open to registered forum users. no membership fees ;)

No problems with a members area as long as it is not a move toward a fee based community. If this is what is needed to prevent google access to a particular section and offers the level of protection needed to allow posting of otherwise censorable info.

Though if it's google bots and the like, perhaps a specific line in the robots.txt file could be used to prevent spidering of that forum ID. This would perhaps be easier to administrate. Then again there are perhaps a few pesky search bots that will ignore the instruction file.

Having worked on highly modified forums for a few years, I'm happy to help answer any points should the techy guys here need it, but looking at the forum I'm sure they have it covered already :)

perhaps a linking of members from the hall of fame or register to a members section could be a possibility, that way ensuring sensetive info is only shared with actual owners?

I find this forum to be my favourite one for the XF, whereas I have felt inclined to only dip in and out of the world wide site of the same name (.com) where it does not feel quite as friendly in format.

However at times I have felt very frustrated that .uk has taken the ultra-safe route and censored items with undue alacrity to the point of running scared when a more considered view may have kept things on a more even keel.

Further I find it extraordinary that naming a dealership when it is a positive post is perfectly acceptable whereas nothing 'bad' about that named dealership can be published for fear of litigation for slander or libel. Well I'm afraid that saying the dealership in such-and-such a town has given bad service will leave the forum and poster just as open to legal proceedings given the paucity of dealers; clearly it is not rocket science for a court to prove which dealership is being criticised? To compound my uncomfortable feeling it seems peculiar that if JLR itself is criticised that post is left to stand (bravo); surely the legal clout of JLR is far greater than a mere dealer? Surely legal proceedings would only be issued where the dealer/JLR could say they have suffered defamation because what was written/said is untrue; they would be foolhardy indeed to pursue the poster/forum through the courts other than to get wider negative publicity if the case were fact. However the Moderators have admitted that they are not legal minded, surely we must have an XF driving Solicitor/Barrister member who could gainsay or advise the Mods? After all Judge John Deed drives an XK! Free legal advice for the greater good of the Forum and all that!

Soap box over; All said and done I have found an extraordinary amount of useful information here on .uk regarding the XF; especially from those brave first adopters. All of this has enthused me to such a degree that I have tracked down a dealer who is willing to give me 10%+ off a new XF - ordering day this coming Saturday! oh and it will be Botanical Green

David you might be right in saying we are overcautious when shielding the name of a dealer when posting negative comments. However, I am advised that the publishing of material of this type is unwise and in the words of Roma:

"Unfortunately, the way the law works with Internet forums, that isn't a good idea. I run my own car forum and wouldn't permit anyone naming and shaming in a public area of the forum. It's a legal minefield so it's best not to name names."

We do not ever want to find ourselves in a situation of having to defend an action and by abiding by this simple rule we will reduce the risk.
What may happen on other sites is of no concern, that is a matter for them alone.

Jaguar have broad shoulders, and whilst I can't speak for them, I suspect that when they read words such as yours, above, they might well take the view that they have to take the rough with the smooth. Great to read that you have done a deal and I wish you well for a splendid day on Saturday.
Of course Jaguar will monitor what is written and only on a very few occasions have they commented on a post. On each occasion it has been the same thing; they simply would prefer they we do not publish the names of their staff. An entirely reasonable request in my view :)

I do hope that your substantive point will be addressed by simply establishing a Members Only area, which I imagine you will have voted for :)
