I've noticed my gearbox doing something odd when engine and gearbox are cold and would appreciate it if anyone can tell me if theirs does the same.

I've noticed that before the engine (and therefore gearbox) have warmed up that mine will coast when the accelerator is released. By coast I mean that the engine revs drop right back to idle. To further explore this I've also changed down manually during this 'cold coasting' phase. At these down shifts, the engine revs flick up to where you would expect them to be for the new gear but only momentarily before they drop back to idle again. This event occurs whenever the car is cold and only last for a few miles... say 4 or 5 at most.

I'm not saying that there is anything wrong with the car but I'm curious as to what is going on? It's not the first auto I've had but it is the first time I've seen this behaviour.

I see this as well.
To be honest I thought it was a fault with the rev counter, but maybe your explanation is correct.
I've just been ignoring it!
