It's about time I checked my engine oil level! I want to but two 1-litre bottles to keep at home for topping up if necessary. Do I need to buy the oil from a Jag dealer or can I get it from Halfords (or similar)? If so, what is the exact spec that I need?

You can get it anywhere as it is has a Ford spec. I have just checked the level in my 2.7D and it not used any oil in 3000 mliles

I bought two 1-litre bottles of Castrol Magnatec 5W-30 engine oil from Halfords for £10 each. The Jag dealer was charging £12 per litre. The specification on the back of the bottle is:

SAE 5W-30; API SL; ILSAC GF-3; ACEA A1/B1; Ford WSS-M2C913-A, Ford WSS-M2C913-B
It's the last specification mentioned, WSS-M2C913-B, that is required for the 2.7D V6 engine.
