Apologies if this isn't in the correct section but I am wondering what dealer options are available with regards to Paint & interior care packages? I ordered my new XF 2 weeks ago but nothing was mentioned during the order process regarding these. Will my dealer offer these up once a delivery date is confirmed or should I be contacting them to discuss now?

Secondly, are they worth the money or can alternative chip cover be sought elsewhere? My car is Black so Im not daft and am anticipating accidental scratches & chips. I love black cars so unfortunately there was to be no compromise on the colour :)

Cheers in advance for any advice you can offer me.

Hi Gary,

Your dealer will be able to offer you small accident protection and alloy/tyre protection. Usually £300-£500 for each one depending on the offers they have on and the number of claims and excesses they might impose. They can do it at any time so if they've not spoken about it yet, allow an hour on top of your collection time! In the last 12 months I've bought:

Alloy wheel and tyre = 3 year policy, up to 10 claims, no excess, £250 limit per claim - £249 (should have been £399 allegedly)
Small bump = 3 year policy, unlimited claims, £10 excess per panel - £399
Alloy wheel only = 3 year policy, up to 10 claims, no excess, £250 limit per claim - £179

In so much as looking after the manufacturer finish (in and out) unless you trust your dealer I'd avoid any sort of G3/paint protection as that is only as good as the way in which the paint is prepared and the products applied. If you want that kind of thing, you'll find a specialist detailer will charge the same or less and the car will look better for longer. The last recommendation would be to invest in some decent hand cleaning products so that the washing of your car is quick and easy and you don't add swirl marks. Small things like using two buckets and a wash mit will make all the difference! After that you should invest in some reasonable wax to keep the rain and other contaminants from damaging the paint work. If you like to wax, a softer wax like Poorboys Natty's Blue worked brilliantly on my black Megane. Or something harder like a Collinite product will last longer between waxes.

I love a black car too and ran my black RenaultSport Megane for 3 years and the paintwork was fairly easy to keep shiny! Just don't be tempted to the local car wash!

Gary if you Search Pureguard, Diamonbrite you will discover a great deal about these systems. On the whole I think the consensus is, expressed over many years now, that they are not worth the money. It is a good income stream for some dealerships and it is interesting that you were not told about them.
I think the smart money is on a good "detail" from a specialist. Personally I would not go down that route until my car was showing signs of age. Then like magic it would look new again.
Other point to keep in mind is that the dealer systems still require regular top up applications of special potions. They are not a simple apply and forget option.
This system looked interesting http://www.xfforum.co.uk/threads/11593 which Stark considerd for his car, no doubt he can comment in line with his experience.

Smart insurance

Hi
I had a recent need for small damage insurance last week.
Have a look at the thread "smart insurance works" - sorry can't post link using my iPad
Very pleased with results
On the other hand, had it on my previous car and didn't use it before I sold it!

Mr Turner, did any of the mentioned policies cover chips and scratches?
The one called Small bump, aka Smart Insurance, minor damage, scuff cover is the one we have. I think it's titled Small Bump Protection and covers minor damage up to 15cm. All dealers will provide some sort of cover :)

I tend to think of anything I can! When they tell you the price say "my mate just bought a Range Rover Sport and paid [£50 less than the quote]" or "Is that the best price you can do it at? I'm sure I can get it at [£50 less] independently?"

I don't like to pay full price for anything! When I got the tyre and wheel cover for the Jaguar, they said their usual price on it was £399, but due to their failure to get the car ready on time they'd do it for £299. I found a mark on the car I didn't like and asked them to do it for £249... They did!

 I allowed 3 hours when collecting my SV8, ended up being there 4 and still didn't take the car away! It stayed for them to fit new pads and discs on the front!
